A brief overview of the work

Riyadh Municipality issued the technical standards and executive specifications of road components and elements in Riyadh. It consists of three guides; each guide consists of several parts with a total of eight parts (volumes). These guides were intended to achieve the following:

  • Comprehensiveness in terms of the elements and components of urban roads, especially roads in Riyadh
  • Ease of use - to a large extent - to contain examples and indicative designs to help the engineer to apply the guides' contents easily
  • Full coordination with all relevant authorities of the city's road network during roads preparation so that these guides have taken into account the requirements of these authorities.
  • Unifying the standards and executive specifications of the roads that are implemented on the city roads so as to help achieve the required homogeneity of the road network
  • The basis of specific criteria for the city and so that the outputs of the various studies done in the city on the road components are added periodically through the issuance of successive editions of these guides after adding these results to them
These guides are :
  • Guide of cross-sections elements of streets and roads, consisting of a guide and an annex :
    • Guide of cross-sections elements of streets and roads
    • Annex of cross-sections elements of streets and roads
  • Guide of the horizontal planes for streets and roads, consists of four parts:
    • Part 1: Traffic facilities for road links
    • Part 2: Guidance examples of surface intersections
    • Part 3: Parking facilities
    • Part 4: Pedestrian facilities
  • Guide of street and road equipment, consisting of two parts:
    • Part 1: Traffic Control Equipment
    • Part 2: Service Equipment, where it addresses

The parts of each guide are wrapped in a distinctive color; the green color was selected for the guide of cross-sections elements of streets and roads, the brown color for the guide of the horizontal planes of streets and roads and the blue color for the guide of the streets and roads equipment. These guides are also grouped into a single volume to easily extract any part of it. Below are brief details of the guides and its various parts.

The first guide

(Cross sections elements of streets and roads) It consists of a guide and an annex. This guide deals with the technical standards and operational specifications of the cross-section elements of streets and roads in particular, and the values and limits that have been used in preparing the typical cross-sections of streets and roads. A set of typical street and road segments has been developed according to the street widths commonly used in the new plans, and according to the category of these functional streets. Typical cross-sections included in this guide have been developed specifically for new streets and roads. As for the existing streets and roads, some of the elements presented in this guide can be used when there will be some improvements to be made, depending on the nature of each site separately. As for the annex of this guide, it contains details of the elements of cross-sections of streets and roads, including the minimum and maximum values of some elements that can be used in special cases, when the conditions of the site do not allow the implementation of the typical cross-sections provided in the guide, but after the approval of the competent authorities.

Part three

Thanks to God, these guides appeared in 1426 H (2005 G), to be applied by all the bodies working in the city of Riyadh in this area. In spite of the great effort and diligence that the team has done to execute these guides, some observations are likely to appear, as in any human effort.
